A: They’re among the growing group of celebrity victims of a recent high-profile “doxxing” hack.
Referred to by some as a prank, this tactic of accessing and sharing personal data, including financial information, is a serious cyber crime. As of Monday, as many as 12 celebrities and political figures have been targeted and have found their social security numbers, credit card info and banking information posted publicly.
The growing list of victims, now at about 17, includes Britney Spears, Jay-Z, Kim Kardashian, Sarah Palin, Vice President Joe Biden, and the chief of the LAPD. The information, which was posted anonymously on a Russian website, may or may not be authentic. It is posible the hacker or hackers collected enough personal data about the celebrities to log them in to credit report websites and, essentially, steal the vitims’ identities.
We never thought we’d say this, but don’t end up like Michelle. Protect your sensitive data! Someone should have told the first lady about Keeper.
